Mixed Emotions-Tempe Daily News-July 1 1977

Plea of a local member of Rev. Moon's Unification Church for a solicitation permit from the city was greeted with mixed emotions at Tempe City Council meeting last night. Above, council members and city staffers listen with varying degrees of intentness to the Unification member, though denial of the permit appeared to be a foregone conclusion as both cities of Mesa and Scottsdale had previously turned down solicitation permits for the controversial church. Far left is the city clerk Virginia Thompson. Speaking against issuing of the permit was the mother of a young member of the Unification Church, which has been accused in various parts of the country of "brain-washing" young people and luring them away from their families.
