DescriptionLetter dated 8/7/1898 through 8/21/1898 from Dr. Fenn J Hart, Tempe's first mayor, written to his wife Rosa Ann Brown Hart in Tempe, Arizona during his ocean voyage from Honolulu, Hawaii to the Philippine Islands, to serve as a Red Cross physician and combat surgeon during the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars from 1898 - c. 1900. Dr. Hart describes a beautiful but rough voyage, the weather, sea sickness among men, breakdowns of the ship causing delays, the burying at sea of an injured Asian crewmember, and the poor treatment of soldiers by officers, advising his wife to prevent their brother-in-law from enlisting. He goes on to describe his relief at finally reaching port in Manila, as well as the sailors' intrepidation of the international war vessels also docked there.
