DescriptionJournal entry of Dr. Fenn J Hart, Tempe's first mayor, dated 5/25/1899 detailing his ocean voyage from Manila, Philippine Islands, to Hong Kong, China, upon his return from serving as a Red Cross physician and combat surgeon during the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars from 1898 - c. 1900. Dr. Hart describes how the soldiers remained cheerful and cordial despite an ocean voyage full of storms, strong winds, waves, and sea sickness among the men, as well as mishaps and spoiling of food and supplies as a result of the rough voyage. During calmer times on the ocean Dr. Hart describes seeing various flying fish and other beautiful flora and fauna, he writes of camaraderie among the men, and tales of the officers running fire drills and playing pranks on the soldiers.
