Dr. Hart mentions a small pox epidemic among the tribes he was forced to vaccinate against upon his arrival to the San Xavier Mission near Tucson, where he was stationed as a physician, surgeon and school director for the Papago villages from 1884 - 1887. Dr. Hart also includes many adventures and misadventures, descriptions of horseback rides around the region, mining discoveries, the making of new friends and reunification with old ones.
