DescriptionLetter dated 01/10/1899 through 01/12/1899 from Dr. Fenn J Hart, Tempe's first mayor, written from the Philippine Islands on his personal Red Cross physician stationary, to his wife Rosa Ann Brown Hart in Tempe, Arizona. The letter was written during Dr. Hart's time as a Red Cross physician and combat surgeon during the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars from 1898 - c. 1900. In the letter Dr. Hart states he is concerned that he has not heard from Mrs. Hart in a month, pleading with her not to be angry that he continued to stay in Manila providing medical aid to the invalid soldiers and small pox patients while the Filipino insurgency continued, describing insurgent attacks on soldiers as incessant and praising the American forces for their fortitude and courage. He promises to provide more financial assistance to her and return home soon to open a private practice. He appears to be trying to cheer her up, pleading with her to be happy, love their baby, not worry about him, and excuse him for not writing more.
