Came to Tempe in 1888.
In 1879, his family moved to Frio County, Texas. In 1880, he and two of his brothers, Charles O. and A. G. Austin, worked on the International and Great Northern Raiload, running from San Antonio to Laredo. When drought struck Texas, they left Texas and headed for the Arizona Territory. The party included his father, A. W. Austin, and his uncle, Perry Wilson. They entered Arizona near Fort Bowie, and then went to Willcox, Florence, Sacaton and Mesa, and arrived in Tempe on July 4, 1888. From Tempe the family moved out to Phoenix and to the Cartwright School neighborhood. In December 1889, they leased the old Lum Gray section near Tempe and remained there until the spring of 1892, when they removed to a home on Mill Avenue just south of town. Owned land near Kyrene in 1900.
Served on the Kyrene School District Governing Board, 1903-1918. In 1921, '23, -'26 lived at R 2. In 1931 was W. S. who had a P O Box.
