DescriptionFrom an article/photograph in Tempe Daily News, August 15, 1977:

Historic Mementoes - Displays of photos and other documents of First national Bank's early days in Tempe were exhibited at Tempe's Sixth and Mill main branch Friday afternoon as local FNB bankers joined in celebration of the bank's Centennial birthday. Among mementos above are photos of J.W. Woolf (at rear right), founding director of the First National Bank in Tempe, the first in the city; and Charles Woolf, president of the bank here from 1926-1934; the bank building as it looked during Charles Woolf's presidency; currency used prior to present Federal Reserve Notes; and a gun for protection against would-be bank robbers. Tempe's main First National Bank was located at Fifth and Mill in 1901, and has been at Sixth and Mill since 1912. The Tempe-Mesa branch at 1400 East Apache, opened in 1960, is the city's second oldest branch. That currency note was redeemable at bank of issue rather than through the US Treasury and has on it "Tempe National Bank" with seal including signature of the bank's president at the time.

The film negative of this photograph is housed in box 2G7-D.
