At age 16, he was told he had only six months to live. He left his home in Winsocket, Rhode Island to come to Arizona, where he lived a long life. Two of his sisters moved to Tempe earlier. He took a two-week embalming course in Los Angeles, and the took over a small part of sister Sophia Carr Hodnett's mercantile store at 5th Street and Mill. The store had for many years sold dry goods for lining and covering handmade caskets. He developed it into a full-fledged undertaking business in 1906, '30, '31, '32., -'39. In 1925, he moved the business and his family home to 25[26] E. 5th Street. As the only 24-hour business in town, Carr's Mortuary became the headquarters for the town's Volunteer Fire Department. He served as a member of the Tempe Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, joining before he was legally old enough. He was Tempe Fire Chief in 1922, 1929, '30, '31, '32. Had the fire alarm system at his house in back of the mortuary, as well as having the only ambulance in town.
In 1923, he encouraged local merchants to invest in construction of the swimming pool at Tempe Beach Park.
