BiographyCame to the United States c1870.
Came to Tempe c1877.
Farmer and businessman.
Tempe City Councilman, 1910-1912.
He left Norway as a sailor and traveled around the world for 3 or 4 years. He landed in Boston,
Massachusetts, and later went to California. He came to Arizona on a freight wagon in 1877, and worked for freighters operating between Tucson and Tombstone until c1881.
In 1881, he established a homestead at present-day location of Southern and Mill avenues. He grew
alfalfa and grains and raised cattle.
He became a naturalized citizen in 1883.
In 1888, he built the first clay brick house in Tempe. About that time, he also built the Donofrio Building at Central and Washington in Phoenix.
In 1909, he built the brick Ellingson Grain Warehouse at W. 7th Street and Maple to house a grain, feed and seed business which he ran with his sons [in 1922, and in 1927]. In 1923 was a rancher.
He was a shareholder in the Tempe Irrigating Canal Company in 1923.
He owned E2 W2 SE4 N of canal, section 33 (18 acres), E2 NE4 SE4 section 33 (20 acres), SE4 SE4 N of canal, section 33 (25 acres), and W2 section 34 (317 acres), in 1924
Lived at Southern and Mill; moved to 620 S. Mill Avenue, c1910.- 21,'23,-'25, -'26, '28
