BiographyWhile she and her husband, R. A. Windes, were attending the University of Chicago, they were encouraged to move to Arizona because of her health. They arrived in Prescott in 1879.
She assisted her husband, the first Baptist missionary in the Territory of Arizona, to organize
the First Baptist churches of Prescott, Phoenix, Globe, Jerome, and Verde Valley. She was
also the first woman writer of verse in Arizona. Much of her poetry and prose was published in Arizona periodicals. She was always active in the religious, civic and political affairs of the territory and state. She was an active member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union for 34 years, and a loyal member of the Christian Homes Association and Tempe Baptist Church. She organized the first Juvenile Temperance Society in the territory, and was a leader in the cause of woman suffrage. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary,
the Tempe Woman's Club, and the Arizona Pioneer Historical Society (now the Arizona Historical Society).
Lived on Van Ness Avenue in 1910. In 1930, -'32 lived at 119 E 8th. See also: Windes, Romulus A.
