DescriptionThis is a variant of a restauration gondola chair ("American Furniture of the Nineteenth Century", Celia Jackson Otto, p100). It has cabriole front legs and two curved stiles from foot to crest. The seat frame is made up of four pieces of wood, which are oak with a walnut veneer. The front piece is serpentine (composed of a convex curve flanked by two concave curves). There is a chip in the veneer at the back. The left and right side of the seat frame are dipped. The frame of the seat attaches to the front legs and stiles with mortise and tenon joints. A padded needlepoint seat sits on the frame and is removable. It is maroon with flowers in the center. A vase shaped splat is attached to the back of the seat frame and the crest rail with mortise and tenon joints. The splat and crest rail have a walnut veneer on the front. The crest rail has leaf scroll work in the center and there is also a finger hole. The crest rail is attached to the stiles with mortise and tenon joints.
